Calligraphy & illumination

Children are obsessed by quill pens so we’ve created a display where they can have a go using a real quill pen. Visitors will receive instruction on how to use the pen and can try their hand at writing medieval gothic script. They can then take their creations home with them.

We also have a ‘Marvellous Medieval Beasts’ talk, with fantastic paintings of the strange and curious creatures found in medieval manuscripts such as the enormous eared Panotti, who use their ears as blankets on cold nights or to fly away from their enemies; or the peculiar bonnacon who has a very unusual defence mechanism! The talks can be run 3-4 times a day and in between, visitors can use the quill pens. A very relaxing and peaceful display, many parents say it’s the quietest their kids have been all day! For those not old enough to write, they can colour in a dragon. Ideally suited to an indoor site due to the nature of the materials, paper and feathers, but can be run in a tent if need be.

Although not a master calligrapher, Karen has been studying calligraphy for many years.
